Brief Bio: Dr. Smith-Greenaway's research areas include demography, health, mortality, bereavement, inequality, family and international sociology. Broadly, her research examines how social conditions impact individual and family wellbeing and experiences. Dr. Smith-Greenaway's recent work analyzes the influence of mortality conditions on family systems, the impact of child loss on family dynamics, and the consequences of community mortality conditions for women’s fertility. She also studies how social inequality influences young adults’ educational, childbearing, and marital experiences.
Penn State’s Demography Program: I found the Demography Program at Penn State to be an exceptionally supportive training environment. The program’s top-notch methodological training, committed mentors, and generous research support fostered my development as a researcher. The program certainly pushed me to defend my ideas with rigor, but the collegial environment made it a fun experience that I’ll remember fondly.
