Admissions for Penn State Graduate Students

Once you are enrolled as a Penn State graduate student in an affiliated department, it only takes a few steps to become a dual-title Demography student!

Why join the Demography program as soon as possible?

  • Receive notifications from the Program Chair about upcoming program events, available supports from the Demography program, interesting international conference opportunities, & internship and job opportunities
  • Partipate in Mini PAA to learn and practice your oral or poster presentation skills prior to annual PAA meeting.
  • Become eligible for Demography RA positions and/or affiliated T32 funding
  • Become eligible to receive conference travel support if you are on the program

Steps to join the Demography program

  1. Review the Demography website to learn more about Demography as a field and its instruction at Penn State.  Key websites to review are as follows:
    1. What is Demography?
    2. Demographic Training vs. "Home" program training at Penn State
    3. Overview of the Demography Curriculum
    4. Requirements & Course Checklists for Demography PhD, MA/MS & Minor
  2. Talk to your current advisor and PIC/DGS about your interest in the dual-title demography program.
  3. Talk to a Demography faculty member in your degree program about your academic and career interests. Review the list of Demography faculty by program.
  4. Find a Demography faculty member willing to be your dual-title faculty advisor. While this person is usually in your program, they do not have to be.
  5. Apply using the Dual-title Demography Application Form
    • To receive a demography degree, you must apply before completing your qualifying exams.
    • To earn a minor in demography, you can apply any time.

As soon as possible, enroll in DEMOG 590, the professionalization seminar, during the fall semester to learn more about the dual-title program and demographic opportunities at Penn State. You can enroll in DEMOG 590 before your application is submitted and approved.
