Courses in the Demography curriculum fall into the following categories:
- Survey courses - mixed undergraduate & graduate courses that provide an overview of a demographic perspective & topics
- Demographic Processes courses - graduate seminars dedicated to fundamental demographic topics
- Methods courses - graduate courses to learn the methodological tools demographers use
- Population Studies courses - graduate seminars that apply a demographic perspective to a given research area
- Professional development course (DEMOG 590) - one-hour professional seminar with content targeted for different educational stages
Each degree has different requirements for courses from each category:What are Electives?
For a Demography PhD or PhD minor, students are required to take additional Demography classes from any training area. Students can use their electives to pursue their personal interests within demography. For example, students can take additional Methods classes or additional Population Studies courses to align with their research and career goals.
What is DEMOG 590?
DEMOG 590 is a one-credit professional development seminar. The fall and spring versions of the course are different and intended for different students.
- Fall semester - Intended for (1) first-year graduate students who plan to apply to the dual-title program and (2) Ph.D. students minoring in Demography.
- Spring semester - Intended for third-year, dual-title Ph.D. Demography students who have already taken the Fall semester version, and have not yet taken their comprehensive exams.
