Brief Bio: Susan L. Brown received her PhD in sociology and demography from The Pennsylvania State University in 1998 and joined the Bowling Green faculty the same year. Her areas of expertise include family sociology and demography, fertility, and gender. Dr. Brown's research examines the implications of the rapid transformation of American family life, with a focus on recent changes in family structure and living arrangements. Much of her work examines cohabitation and its effects on the well-being of both children and adults.
Dr. Susan Brown is Professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research. A family demographer, her research interests focus on how family structure is tied to individual well-being. In particular, she examines how new family forms, including cohabitation, are related to the health and well-being of children and adults. Much of her recent work addresses transitions into and out of intimate partnerships in later life. Her research on gray divorce has received national media coverage in outlets such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, and The Today Show. Dr. Brown has secured roughly $5 million in federal grant support from the US Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health.
